My thoughts

Thursday, February 21, 2008

In life, you get to see many different kinds of people. There are people who are self-centered, arrogant, insensitive, cheerful, easy-going and the list goes on... At many times, multiple of such characteristics are present in an individual. I believe this is one of the main attributions of the uniqueness of an individual.

However, this so called "uniqueness" in individual essentially brings about differences among them, which may lead to disagreement. Minor disagreement might be useful to a relationship. On the other hand, a major disagreement or a major conflict could have detrimental effects to a relationship.

A minor disagreement allows us to understand each other better and thus, improves the relationship. A major disagreement usually ended up in a fight. Typically, people tend to focus more on the cause of a disagreement. Remember it was already mentioned earlier in this essay, cause of disagreement is often due to differences. Instead of focussing on the cause of a disagreement, appropriate attention should be paid on the ways to minimise such major disagreements. This is because there is no way that we could standardise everyone's personality or characters. Even if there is a possibility to do so, it just make everyone less "unique" or interesting.

I think minimising major disagreement requires good understanding and communication skills. Communication is an important aspect of life especially when there are differences in people in terms of idealogies, personalities, so on and so forth. Often, disagreement arises when there is a communication breakdown. Thus, The ability to convey your ideas / thoughts appropriately across another person is absolutely necessary.

Tactical usage of words is another essential part of good communication. Alright. Some people will be wondering; if we have to be so careful in our conversation, there would not be a different between having true friends or acquaintances. This is another added level of complexity, so to speak. Added elements such as compromising and understanding come into play especially in friendship or intimate relationship. Among acquaintances, there is lower level of compromising and understanding between each others as compared to friendship. Naturally, good communication is more required in such case. While, in the case of a strong bonded friendship, there are 'compromising' and 'understanding' in place. The need for absolutely good communication is minimum. I have to highlight that it should not be thought that good communication is not required in friendship. In fact, it is as important as other qualities such as compromising etc... The different I wanted to highlight is as friends, you can afford to be less tactical in your speech whereas as acquaintances this skill became one of the important skills required in maintaining such relationship.

In conclusion, human relation is a highly complexe and complicated aspect of life. Even geniuses might have difficulties in this aspect. "Always think before you speak up" is critical. Remember the different between acquaintances and friends.
